Is the end of the yarn color being dropped cut off after the 6 stitches worked when adding in the new color? I’m thinking this is why weaving in ends is not necessary. But what about the end of the new color being added (at the edge of the strip)? Will that end unravel if not woven in?

I left about a 1/4" after the 6 stitches. This yarn is pretty felty so I don’t think there is much unraveling risk. That said, if it makes you feel better to weave in a bit more, feel free, but I think the intention of the 6 stitches using it is the “weaving” alternative.
