How many balls of each yarn do you need to make the blanket?
Hi Bailey! That’s a really good question but a hard one to answer. If you are doing a 2022 blanket, you won’t know how many days you had of each color until the end of the year. I’ve got one ball of each of my colors winging it’s way to me as I type this and I’ll see how it goes and order more as I need it.
If you are doing a historic blanket (perhaps the year you were born) and you’ve already got your full temperature chart, you can do a bit of math to figure it out. Weigh a ball of yarn, do one (or maybe two) daily repeats (in my case each repeat is a garter ridge so two rows), and then weigh your ball of yarn again. Subtract the end number from the beginning number and then divide by the number of repeats you worked and you’ll have a good approximation of how much yarn each repeat takes. Then go to your chart, count up how many repeats of each color and see how much yarn that will take for each one.
I’ve got two hybrid projects going as well (one starts in April 2021 and one starts in May 2021) so I have a good idea of what the days past will take and am going rogue on the rest of them. Luckily, all three yarns are readily available so I can get more if I need it and, for this project at least, I’m not the slightest bit worried about the subtleties of dye lots.
Sorry this is not a straightforward answer but the weather isn’t particularly straightforward. Hope it helps.
Thanks for the help! I will just wing it as well and hope that the colors of Rowan Felted Tweed that I picked are not discontinued by Rowan.
A little off topic, but I thought that I saw someone looking for a Strickplaner, which would be great for planning out a blanket or anything else! I have a new one with stickers that I would be happy to sell for a very reasonable price if anyone is interested. Thank you!
Those are nice and now they’re good for as long as it takes to fill it up. No more years which is perfect for me since I always forget to use my journals and my Strickmich. This year is my 4th one.
The day is finally here! Yarn has arrived from its various sources and I’ve narrowed my colours down to 13. (Yes I do have another 13 or so that I thought I’d use but didn’t….stash building is okay right?!) Did some jigging of the temp ranges to get my desired outcome and I think I’m happy. My only outstanding consideration is the two warmest colours, they don’t quite flow for me, so I may ditch them all together but I’m a ways away from making that decision! (Currently-20°C here so can’t fathom anything warm.)
The pinks came out a little more orange looking in the pic.
Now to do some catch-up!
Have decided the carbon colour was not the best counterpoint for my choices so have replaced this with turquoise and ripped back to start again.
Your colors are so cheerful, I look forward to seeing what your days knit into!
You could pick a color spectrum that you like and assign temperatures to the colors yourself. Your blanket, your choice.
Beautiful color palette!
Anybody else ready for Show-And-Tell time?
I’ve actually got three projects going but I’ve made some good progress on one of them. This is the baby blanket that starts on April 22, 2021. In this picture, I’m up to May 22 so Baby Luke was one month old!
One of the things I committed to for 2022 and is keeping my knitting organized in way that I find pleasing. I’ve done it in the past but sort of randomly. This year, I will be insta-ready at a moments notice! Here’s my work basket for this blanket.
I keep the colors for the current week (this part of the blanket is historic so I know what’s coming), a little pair of scissors, and my tote bag for when I’m taking it on the road.
No I did not choose my tote bag to match my knitting although I kind of wish I could say I did.
My friend Pantera owns a small textile company (www.brooklynmojo.com) and makes great, simple bags and accessories. A few years back, she was in a position to do a ctrl-alt-del on her life and she just went ahead and rebooted. A friend gifted her a block printing class and the rest is, as they say, history. She prints all her own fabric and makes these beautiful bags in her studio (formerly known as her living room) in Brooklyn. I like the mojo (see what I did there) that this bag brings to the project – a new life and a new life!
These are so yummy together. Love it!
I agree.
Make the temperature increments smaller. I started out with 10 deg increments then realized that I’d be in large sections of the same color as well.
I really do need to create my color card so I’m not always having to rely on sitting in front of my laptop.

That’s looking good!
I haven’t started mine yet and figure there’s still time. I’m working on a pullover and two other small blankets and would like to clear up all this first. I also need to order my ‘boarder’ yarn but won’t need that until I’m into February. Again, there’s time.
Also, I ordered a large zipper tote to keep all of my temperature project yarns in. Right now, there are some rolling around on the floor here, some in a box over there, and I think there’s even some at the other end of the loft where I have my yarn winding area.
This place is a mess…
At least if you fall onto yarn it doesn’t hurt. LOL

I saved your photo of color. Love what you put together and I know I have all these colors💞
Popping in for a quick hello and two quick things. My cable is completely out right now so I’m using my phone as a hot spot so it’s like 1998 dial up here at Chez Chaos.
First, I’m still hearing a lot about folks figuring out their temp charts. Email me at kjt1211@optonline.net or dm me here with your email and I will send you my spreadsheet which has fillable templates to figure out the right temperature chart for you. For the moment, I have a little work around to avoid the stupid cable outage.
Second, my yarn for my 2022 blanket came over the weekend and I have been having the time of my life arranging and rearranging it. It came with this color card.*
Can you see it? I can’t believe I missed it! Look closely! Wait, I’ll make it bigger.
THERE’S A COLOR CALLED FROZEN!!!
My cold weather colors started with my purples so guess what my new less-than color is. I don’t actually have it and I’m hoping not to have to get it because I really don’t want to be planning for days that are under 15 degrees Fahrenheit because that’s really, really cold here. Minnesota, Canada, and all you other northern folks, I hear you! I know that’s a walk in the park for you but for Yonkers, that’s crazy cold.
Looking forward to seeing all your progress pics!
And if you can believe it, I just got a message on my phone that the elevator in my building is out. Again!!! The world is falling apart around me.
*Don’t you just love a color card?
I’m still a bit behind, but I’ve made it through the first week and started joining a few days. Really liking this muted colour palette so far. Decided to make the sashing dark despite my original plans for light. And for data with heavy rain/snow will use blue/white sashing.
How are others coming along?
@kjt1211 i too love a colour card!!
It’s really lovely! Those colors are beautiful What’s your yarn?
Drops Karisma. First time using it, but needed something local (Canada) that was affordable. So far I like it.
Those are really soothing colors. I’m thinking, since you’re in Canada, those are cold weather days?
I haven’t started mine yet since I’ve got piles of other projects all over the place. I am going to start my color card and did print out my colors and their codes. I’ll share when I find it. It’s here on this laptop somewhere.
When something goes missing on my laptop I blame the Gnomes. They’re everywhere in my photo files.
