For me, blocking can change the size of a finished object a little but, but it’s not a permanent alteration of the size—it’s sort of like setting your hair in curlers (not that I do that lol!). The most certain way to get a result at the size you want is to swatch first and make sure you’re hitting the corrrect gauge listed in the pattern.
I was so excited I got started early on my Everyday cowlette but I am starting another. I added a big button for fun. Love the yarn!
I just got two skeins of Belair and they are a touch different too. Think I will use your idea and blend as I go. Thanks!
Thanks, Ann. I thought that perhaps your experience with Karida’s yarns would help me avoid swatching. LOL I’ve found that some garments knit with superwash merino in particular, can to lose shape or grow, even after blocking. I don’t like swatching in the round and was hoping that by using the sleeve as a swatch (without blocking) would suffice.
I often knit a bit tighter on smaller circumferences like sleeves so I have to be mindful about my gauge. Sometimes I have to use a larger needle for the sleeves.
Well, after starting with sz 4, I switched to 5s. Still not good—5-1/2/“—so now I’m using 6s.
Hi Ann - I’m a first-time sweater knitter (just started knitting this winter) and thought the swoncho would be a good piece to start with since the size/shape is somewhat forgiving. I knit a swatch and the gauge was perfect unblocked…which I thought was a problem. Are you saying not to block for gauge? Thanks, and I’ll probably have more questions. I’m so grateful for this KAL and the lounge.
Congratulations on getting gauge! Massive achievement!
I’m not quite sure what you’re asking re not blocking for gauge. You should block your swatch (let it soak it gently in cold water, then pat it into place and let it dry) to make sure it’s the right gauge after you’ve washed it. It’s likely that your gauge will still be right after washing, but sometimes a swatch will grow or shrink a bit with washing.
So great that you’re jumping in with the swoncho! Keep us posted!
Not sure if I am doing this correctly. Help.
Finished the diagonal mitts from Beginnings.
Great design, so simple yet effective. Used various rainbow yarns and a picot edge as a Pride present for a treasured niece.
Beautiful! These are so great! Thanks for giving us a peek.
Finished object!!! Looks so great! You’re way ahead of me.
I will be starting the Debut Pullover right after I finish my current WIP, which will probably be sometime next week (can’t wait). Just got the yarn - Cedonia Organic Studio DK.
You are one fabulous aunt! Wish I had had an aunt like you when I was growing up!
Looks great, I like the size and positioning of the button. I never would have thought of that.
Thanks for posting, looks great. Definitely going to make this.
Hi all, This is my first MDK Knit A Long. I am in Milwaukee, but pre pandemic and starting in August will split my time between Milwaukee and London (my husband is English, so we have a house - and yarn stash -there as well).
I am going to cast on the Simple Swoncho in Studio Worsted in the Color Hamilton-it seemed fitting since I have seen Hamilton 9 times and have so missed live theater for the last 15 months, but loved the film on Disney+ with the original Cast.
I am a serial Knitter, - constantly knitting and so happy that I can now resume travel and meeting friends for lunch, and always knitting wherever I go. The Swoncho will be my 50th COVID project since March 2020. I love good knitting tools, and plan to use my Dyakcraft needles and wind my yarn on a Winderful. I you have not used them it helps eliminate yarn barf and keeps your yarn clean as you take it places to Knit.
Looking forward to this KAL
How lovely to have England as a getaway! Can’t wait to see how your Hamilton knits up.
Have finished my first set of mitts and started a second. I feel like this is magic yarn for me. It’s cascade heritage which I bought on sale. I originally bought 4 different colors. Ive already made socks (2 pairs of wanderlust), and 2 pairs of squad mitts. I should be able to get multiple pairs of these mitts since they use so little.
Maureen, You look are set to go! I am intrigued by your wiinderful. I Search the term online and could not find it at all. Could you provide details. Love more knitting gadgets! Maria
