You might look at Japanese knitting. I saw something similar in Hitomi Shida’s Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible (translated by Gayle Roehm; it’s in print and available from mainstream bookstores). Not exactly the same, but the technique might be related. It’s mostly k2tog and twisted stitches.
