Tumbling Blocks Scarf Question

Just starting the the Tumbling Blocks Scarf from Open Field Guide 15. Just finished the Rib Lace Scarf earlier this week; my first lace ever. I’ve only been knitting since January.

As for the Tumbling pattern, I’m a little confused… Cast on 248 stitches? I’m working on the Aran Version. Why so many? Is this scarf knitting from the long side? And that makes me wonder, why would one knit a scarf that way?

I guess I’m going to need a longer cord between my circular needles. :thinking: Thanks for the reply.

The videos for this are very helpful as I’d never decreased/increased from the purl side.
