Cabling without a cable needle

I had an article on this topic that worked well for me, but I’ve lost it…
I CAN cable with a cable needle, but I loved doing it without one - but that was several years ago, and I’m staring at a hat with cables pattern and feeling all fumble-fingers.
All suggestions gratefully accepted.

Look at the video tutorial that goes with the November Year of Techniques Yellow Wagtail Scarf. At first, I didn’t think I’d like this, but now I’m happily cabling away. I just finished the socks with the December pattern (LOTS of cables) and am so glad I learned how to do this.
