Team Blanket No. 5: For California Fire Victims

I am also glad to knit a square or two, having already sent mine in for Team Blanket # 3. Would love to knit a couple more, and have plenty of wool on hand.

@klwarren - welcome!. please send what you would like to create before the end of October. Try for a finished size of 11.25 square.

I’d love to knit a square! Lucky for me I have some leftover Cascade 220 at home looking for a project. @d2knits, I’ll email you.

There is a wrenching story in this morning’s LA Times about Ed Bledsoe, who lost his wife and two great-grandchildren in the Carr fire. Here’s the link: http://enewspaper.latimes.com/infinity/article_share.aspx?guid=64903614-b64d-469f-9edc-2cb7482b59ce

I decided to re-knit my square, using a size 4 needle, and it appears that will get close me to the 11.25" square requested. I was afraid having a much smaller edge around the central motif would look odd. Yes, I am a perfectionist!

A size 4 needle!!! Eek😲
But you’re absolutely right about the smaller log cabin border; would look off. Are you using your leftover Lamb’s Pride?

Please send the pattern to:

Ready to knit a square!
Thank you!

I am using Cascade 220 for the border and possibly Paton’s 100% wool for the center (which is 210 yds per 100 gms, so not much heavier than the Cascade).

And even with the smaller needles, it looks like I’ll have to knit only 7 garter ridges around the sides to keep it to the 11.25" square that has been requested. I’m not sure why I seem to knit so much looser than the rest of the world . . .

For another Team project, I did use Lamb’s Pride as requested, and got the 13.25" square with #5 needle.

Oh, okay Vie. Good to know what size needles you used on Team Blanket 2. Because I’m knitting the Lamb’s Pride on size 8 needles but I’ve only completed 2 squares of it. And they’re 4x4. Thx for the reply!
Karyn

Futzing around with gauge, and in doing the math for an 11.25 square using the pattern’s 54 stitches, it looks like the gauge needs to be 4.8 sts to the inch. Swatching on 6, 7 and 8 needles I find I can’t get closer than 5 sts/" (on 8 needles). This should produce a square of 10.8", so if it turns out that small, I guess I’ll add a row or two of additional log cabin. The formula I used is Stitches divided by stitches per inch = inches.
Does this sound okay?

Wow, impressive “math-ing” for a Sunday morning ! Does it also have anything to do with what yarn you’re using?

Yarn is Cascade 220 and Valley Yarns Northampton, courtesy of Martha Bilski who graciously donated the yarn to the project. I’ll be using them together and got the same gauge with each of them.

:ok_hand: Good to know!

I am using a number 4 needle, and decreasing the number of garter rows on around the edge to get to the 11.25" square size (approximately). I used Patton’s 100% wool (which is 210 yds per 100gms) for the center and Cascade 220 for the edges. Nearly done, too!
