Cottage Throw Questions!

So I have decided I must knit the Cottage Thrown because I crave it! two questions:
What would happen if I left the border just…off? Could I knit more stitches on the panels to create a sort of faux-border?

What color Atlas would be a good sub for Barn Red? I’m just not super thrilled with it here.

You could certainly add stitches for a knitted-on border -
What do you think of Clementine in place of the Barn Red? Or choose your 3 favorite color combinations, then work a second panel with each of them, swapping places (ie background, tree, house)
