Hello all- I’m Christine and I pretty much taught myself to knit about 15 years ago, The first thing I made was a sweater from a pattern called “Knit your first sweater”. After that there was no holding back. As far as favorite movies go, To Kill A Mockingbird would be the winner there. Favorite food I’m guessing is a medium rare rib eye with baker and all the fixings, My favorite color changes with the wind. And as far as favorite shoes I prefer to be barefoot, but am usually found in cowboy boots. So that about covers it all except for what I’m currently working on which are socks and a V-neck sweater and of course have about 6 things I want to start now.
Hi! I’m Hazel ( craftylittleelf on ravelry) and currently on a forced knitting sabbatical while I look after my brand new twins. Can’t figure out how to knit while wrangling two babies and hoping that hanging out in the lounge will help to take the edge off!
First thing I ever knit was a dishcloth for my granny, followed by a whole pile of others and my mum is still using some of them. Couldn’t choose one movie as my favourite, favourite colour is purple and on my feet right now are slippers as it’s cold here in England and not making it out of the house much currently.
On needles at the moment are a tomten and a BSJ, might manage a row a day if I’m lucky so could take a while. Also a gansey and a big lebowski replica, both for my husband, but both going on for years, oooops!
Welcome, @hwadeson and congratulations! I’m a twin mom myself (my two are almost 8) and I remember those days so, so well. You definitely need something to keep you a little sane (completely sane may not be in the cards right now . . . ).
Connecting with other twin moms helped me a lot - if you ever need to vent, or need reassurance that you will survive, feel free to message me here or on Rav (same username)
Thanks so much janalukas! Keep reminding myself how much I’ll miss all these baby snuggles when they’re bigger and don’t want to cuddle with mummy anymore!
And you have twins and still find time to design all those gorgeous patterns you have on ravelry - that’s inspiration for me right there.
My goal was to have my first dpn project, the squad mittts, finished for our church Thanksgiving Day 5k yesterday. With the right mitt thumb still on waste yarn & ends waving I was not deterred. The wool was amazingly warm plus we raised $for our local food pantry. Casting on another color combo this morning.
Hi, I’m Ruth and live outside of Billings, MT. I’ve been seriously knitting for the past 10 years having learned as a child. I took time away from yarn for about 30 years and came back to it to knit a dog sweater. From knitting the dog sweater I got pulled into the fiber world of knitting, weaving, and spinning. Love these crafts and most everything to do with fiber. It is so good to be with this community!
Wonderful! Love this picture–your mitts look plenty finished to me! Wishing you a great weekend.
Hello!! I recently discovered this website through an interview on the knitpicks podcast! (Nevermind it’s a several years old episode – I’m listening to the whole thing!).
The first thing I ever knitted was the ugliest scarf on the face on the planet. I kept making weird holes in it that weren’t dropped stitches and looking back on it, I have no idea how I was even doing that – thankfully I was able to gift it to a friend so I never need to see it ever again in life.
My favorite food is either steak or sushi, depending on my mood. I love protein apparently…
I picked up knitting for a super silly reason. I saw a cute blanket at my doctor’s office and decided I wanted it – problem was it was knitted instead of crocheted! I already knew how to crochet, and I could approximate it with crochet – but I didn’t want to… so I learned how to knit!
I’m still pretty new to knitting, a little less than a year so far. I still haven’t made a blanket yet but I love making hats and socks. My husband and my son both love my socks, so I must be doing something right.
My username on ravelry is the same as here if anyone is interested in seeing my recent creations.
Happy to join the group!
I have a BSJ on the needles also & just at the point of having all the stiches on long circular needles to begin the big wrap around band. My first BSJ but determined to finish. At what point is yours? Oh, so do you need a second one for the twins? Enjoy your babies.
Coming late to this thread but YES! The West Wing Weekly is pure delight. These two guys manage to deliver a terrific podcast week after week.
I’m Judy (careynev on Ravelry). I’ve been knitting since about 1999 or so, I think. I started out wanting to make cheap gifts for people for Christmas when I was poor and working 1 full-time and 3 part-time jobs. Yeah, those cotton washcloths never came out quite how I wanted them to, so no one got any hand knits that year. Then I made a felted roll-brim hat from a kit from Claudia’s yarn shop…can’t remember the name now. I love that hat. It is still my go-to hat for super-cold weather. Then I made a sweater for myself that was so big, I thought I would just shrink it “a bit” by soaking it in hot water in the washing machine…I didn’t understand the wash cycle and it went through the soak, wash, and rinse more than once. Yeah, it shrunk down to a size that might fit a doll. Sigh. I almost gave up on knitting then! But I persisted and made another sweater for myself, I think, and then one for my now-husband.
I have come a long way, baby!
I have also moved a long way–started out in NJ while finishing graduate school (I’m a nerdy librarian), then moved all over NJ/NY region while I worked in NYC at Viking Children’s Books (I was an editor). Then moved to Charlottesville, VA for then-beau, now-hubby to do his PhD at UVa. Then moved to Ohio for DH’s first prof job. And that’s where we are today.
My mom is an expert knitter who has been knitting since she was 15 or 16–or before. She & I both do sample knitting for a variety of designers and yarn producers. While I don’t remember it, I know my mom is the one who taught me to knit. She trouble shoots over the phone when I get stuck on something to this day. Yay for crafty mommies!
My latest project? I’m a children’s book author. I never intended to do that! LOL. My first book comes out in April and my second book comes out Spring 2018. If you know any fathers of young children, my first book is What Daddies Like–it’s a rhyming text about things a young bear cub and dad do together in the course of one day. There’s a Pinterest board of crafty ideas for kids to do with/for dads, if you’re interested (https://www.pinterest.com/careynev/what-daddies-like-ideas-for-daddies-and-children/).
I also made a Pinterest board of knitting patterns that could be made to go along with the book–none of them are expressly FOR the book, but since the characters are bears, there are links to patterns for bears; there’s a wee toy bunny the bear cub has on every page, so there are links to patterns for bunnies; the daddy bear wears argyle, so there are links to patterns with argyle or diamond shapes; the daddy and baby cuddle up to read a book under a checkerboard blanket, so there are links to patterns with checkerboards. Check it out–you might find a pattern that sparks your interest. https://www.pinterest.com/careynev/what-daddies-like-inspired-knitting-projects/ I should say the patterns are all freebies.
Hi - I’m Barb, aka Askbew, aka elsiroomom aka elsimom on Ravelry (we didn’t have a Roo yet when I learned to knit). I learned to knit so I could knit a bear for www.motherbearproject.org , which was started by my actual next-door neighbor Amy. My good friend and colleague (who was a knitter) convinced me that I only needed an attention span long enough for one row to be a knitter (I’ve since modified that to one stitch! - ha!). My grandmother had tried to teach me as a child, but it didn’t take (see: attention span) - and I’m so glad I know now - I think she’d like that.
My favorite color is blue.
My favorite animal is the giraffe.
My favorite movie is The Princess Bride
My favorite shoes to wear are Sanita clogs, my favorite shoes to look at are Italian Leather strappy sandals.
I like many foods - but if I could only pick one, it would probably be cheese (donuts were a contender).
I would like to learn to knit FASTER!!! I feel like any other skills I learn would benefit from me getting more knitting done in the time I have available.
So excited about this place!
Hello!
I’m Kay as well. I learned to knit when I was in 7th grade. I took lessons with my grandma during the time Sears had a yarn department (selling Columbia Minerva) with lessons in the store. My first project was a poncho striped in junior school colors, knit in the round. Of course I twisted my cast on stitches and nobody pointed that out to me until the poncho was almost done.
I like to wear Birkenstocks and Alegria shoes, eat pizza and drink wine. I am pretty basic I guess.
I used to work in a yarn store during high school and college and taught classes there. It was a real challenge because I am left handed. I can crochet if I have to. Knitting is what I enjoy!
Hi, I’m Barbara. My mom taught my Girl Scout troop to knit when I was 9 but I never got the hang of it but I could crochet so I did off and on, making baby and toddler things, the occasional hat, baby gifts. When I decided to quit smoking about 10 years ago I took up my hooks to give my hands something to do and fell hard. Then my college-age daughter asked Mom to teach her to knit, she made socks, and I was so jealous I went to a yarn shop and demanded an immediate lesson. The first thing(s) I knitted were fish shaped afghan blocks because they’re fast for a beginner and teach you to knit, purl, increase, and decrease. By the time I had an afghan’s worth of fish I was confident enough to branch out. I’m a sucker for oddball things–knitted or crocheted play food, crowns, a felted tea set, earbud keepers, tiny key-ring purses–I’ll put down an almost finished project to make something most other people would never make. I’m the “making” Meemaw (as opposed to the “shopping” Nana; we each have our own charms, no competition) so I can’t wait until the grandkids get big enough to play with string and sticks with me. And there’s a perpetual Ballband warshrag that lives in the pocket of my car’s driver’s door for waiting rooms and traffic delays. (Thanks for that little addiction, Kay.)
Favorite movie: Rear Window. Favorite color: Red. Favorite food: anything Chocolate
I have too much yarn and too many needles, I’m addicted to Ravelry (bookie) and have everything listed on there except for my very earliest projects and I’m working on that so come see me and be my friend. And I can knit underwater.
Oh, BARBARA: Rear Window. The best! And I love that you’ve staked out your grandmother turf–can you imagine how it would go if you both were knitters?
You’ll definitely beat me to the finish. I’ve just got to the start of the
increases - it is the first in a set of two, but they do already have one
BSJ each and a tomten. These are great baby jackets though, have made loads
for friends babies before.
Hi, I’m Lore and I knit, weave and rug hook. I’m learning how to crochet so I won’t have FPWC. FPWC is a terrible phobia to have. What is FPWC? Fear of patterns with crochet included!
Truthfully I just enjoy fiber in all its forms from yarn to felted wool and I’m looking forward to learning from everyone here.
Snowing & frosty here so a great day to knit. On my 2nd pair of squad mitts I’m doing a seed stich edge & liking the texture. Probably won’t work on my BSJ until after Christmas.
Hi! I’m Natalie from Cambridge, MA. My sister in law taught me to knit when I was 9 to keep me occupied when my nephew was a baby. (My mother, quite thoughtlessly, sent me over there to keep me out of her own hair). I don’t really remember making anything much until high school when I realized one of my best friend’s moms was a knitter. She really inspired me and I haven’t stopped much I’ve the past 40 years. I’m recently widowed and knitting has really helped me thru this past year, including the month next to the hospital bed.
My favorite colors are reds, greys and blues and I wish I could still choose shoes based on looks over comfort I’m interested in learning to knit continental but hate the part of not being good at it. Maybe this will be the year!
Continental is not hard. I taught myself in the pre-internet era. Try a book, it worked fine… I knit a plain stocking stitch sweater, bottom up, in the round, and the sleeves on DPs. After that, I knit something else flat, to learn how to purl Continental. It really is faster, especially if you’re a lefty. I had been knitting for almost twenty years before I changed over. but it sounds like you have been knitting for a while also.
