I use this a lot for sleeves and hems. I have not used it yet in socks, but have only ever knit toe up once and for someone with super skinny calves!
Love the color! What yarn and colorway isit?
It is Tough love sock by Sweet Georgia. No colorway because this was from her “mistake sale” dye lots that were not reproducible or had mistakes. Sorry!!!
Sure was a pretty “mistake”!
Finally turned the heel! Attempted Short Row heel twice and just couldn’t get it to work. Switched to Gusset Heel and am much happier. Working “two at a time” on Magic Loop, so will now pick up second sock, complete the heel, and continue on to the leg.
Just received the field guide and yarn this week.
My gauge is 8.5 spi , foot circumference is 9.1", toe length is 2".
8.5 x (9x 0.90) = 68.85.
So I’ll use 68 sts for my total sock sts.
Used Judy’s Magic Cast-on and, for a more rounded toe, increased every round for half the sts to be increased, then increased every other round until I had 68 sts.
Experimented with different toe increases; tried M1, yo, and kfb. I usually prefer other increases than the kfb and was surprised I liked it the best when doing the toe increases-- the sts seemed more uniform and snug.
I’m knitting additional straight rows of stockinette until the toes are 2" before starting the instep pattern.
Oh, I love this tutorial of Staci Perry’s!
Your toes are nicely rounded. I prefer a more rounded toe than the o e in the pattern which is very pointed. I think I’ll try your version
Thank you
Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere (I did try to find an answer…pinky promise). I’m going to cast on my first pair for the KAL…my foot circumference is exactly between sizes. I’m guessing I should go with the smaller size as socks should have a little negative ease. I’m planning to do a 2x2 rib, which will add a little stretchiness. Oh, ye sock mavens, could one of you confirm my size plan for me? Thanks!
I prefer a snug sock, so if it were me, I’d definitely go with the smaller size!
Beverly! Welcome to sock knitting.
If you’re doing 2x2 rib, I’d use the larger size since that particular stitch contracts so much.
: )
Ahhh, good to know! Thanks, Nell!
I use the medium size but add a little length for my socks that for for me. I am between sizes as well. Always stretchy enough. When I have started with more stitches they are always too loose.
I saw a chart giving suggested leg lengths for knitted socks:
Women’s short: 5-6" med: 7" tall: 8" anklets: 1"
Men’s short: 7" med: 8" tall: 9" anklets: 1.5"
Edit: I didn’t know you post was already answered. I saw your post and had just come across charts correlating shoe sizes to foot circumferences, and lengths and then correlating those to knitted sock dimensions. I agree w Nell to knit the sock’s leg length comparable to sock’s foot length. My oldest son wears a size 13, his foot length is 11.74" so I make the sock foot about 11.25" (for negative ease in length) and the sock leg length between 10-11"
Well… So much for the contrasting toes and heels. I did bring yarn with me camping. I did bring a contrasting color. I did NOT verify that it was super wash. It is not. And the striping yarn is. Dang. That’s OK. This pair will just be stripey.
This pair I am doing toe up with the provisional cast on. I’m also doing my second pair of two at a time socks!
Well the stripes are sure nice anyway. Have fun!
I had the same experience with the short row heel. Switched to gusset and it fits! I’m also doing toe up, two at a time, magic loop.
In tears. I am having trouble losing my live stitches when I unravel the provisional cast on. Unable to find instructions which speak to that.
I’m so sorry, sounds frustrating:(
But I don’t know anything about provisional cast on, or knitting socks. The person that CAN help is @nellknits, however it’s a quarter to midnight on east coast
