Take a deep breath, let it out, relax. You are only knitting with 2 needles. The others are just holding their stitches and waiting their turns. You can do this.
I’m joining the kal! My first socks, first time posting in the lounge and first time being active on Instagram! I may need a lot of help!! First question…my foot circumference is 8 1/2 and legth is 9”. Which size would you recommend? Thanks!
Welcome to the group - and to sock knitting!
This is a great question, socks should be snugger than loose, so I would cast on for the 2nd size which is 8 inches around, but I would follow the (foot) length directions for the first size; which is 9 inches. Happy knitting, let us know how it goes!
Thank you! Here I go…swatching now!
I received my yarn and book today so I’m ready! I’ve never done a kal and am excited to be with everyone on this fun project.
I’m ready! Downloaded #11 for easy travel as the guide and the socks will travel abroad with me in a few weeks! Let’s see how many I can do…probably depends on the amount of English Ale and Belguim Beer I consume…
I call a do over on my first toe up sock. Sigh. It was just too big. I kept going longer than I should have and then finally gave up and frogged it all. Tomorrow is another day. Going down a needle size. I don’t give up easily.
I do love the diagonal rib pattern!!! Update soon. Hope you all get a good start the very first time.
Consider it "swatching" It’s all good!!!
I’m in. I feel like this will be my first pair of socks but really they will be my first pair of successful socks (she said confidently). --I made one pair of DK short row toe and heel socks that weren’t bad but too big. I have another pair that I started as 2 at a time but I do NOT like having to pay attention to 2 balls of yarn and which side am I on with both yada yada so I separated them and that has been better but I (finally) realized THEY will also be too big, and one has an odd lump where I started increasing stitches mysteriously. NOW I will try a Wanderlust sock with wonderful Neighborhood Fiber CO in Stephen Towns color way. -Third’s a charm!
I too keep making socks that are too big. I have gone down to a size 1 needle. That seem’s awful small!
This would be a good KAL for me since I need all the encouragement I can get to finish a pair of socks. I have try to knit socks before, but never completed a pair.
you can do it
I swatched and got guage (first swatch!) using us 1 Karbonz dpn’s and some Zauberball Crazy I had in stash. I’m ready to cast on!! Since it’s my first sock I’m keeping it simple - cuff down, straight stockinette, no pattern. I’m so excited to try socks, especially with this forum for help & advice!!
Oooh, I love the colors in this yarn. i can’t wait to see how it knits up.
Over a week ago I decided that this season would be my Summer O’ Socks. Little did I know that MDK had the same notion. Ah, great minds think alike! With my Field Guide in hand and two skeins on order I’ll soon join the KAL. I’m currently knitting a pair using a pattern from Wendy Johnson’s Socks From The Toe Up. Like Kay I learned to knit socks using two circulars from Cat Bordhi - through her classic book, not, unfortunately, from her in person. And I live in Oregon! I’m partial to two-at-a-time, but have recently discovered that knitting one sock may actually be faster. Excited to be a part of this group, especially as I’m not an Instagram or Facebook joiner. Cheers, everyone!
My husband wears size 11 shoes, his foot circumference is 10 1/2", length also 10 1/2". You’ll want a bit of negative ease with socks, so I knit the foot to be no more than 9" around and 9" long. Hope this helps!
Thank you so much. I guess I could just measure his foot too!
Received my Field Guide #11 and beautiful Neighborhood Fiber Co. Banksy today! Will be doing toe-up, two at a time, Magic Loop. Now just need to decide which pattern…
Pretty yarn!
I received my Wanderlust book and two irresistible skeins of sock yarn yesterday, a lovely gift at the end of a difficult week! I’m so excited to use these beauties! (Lichen and Lace in Beach Glass and Neighborhood Studio Sock in Sandy Point). I’m having a hard time resisting the temptation to cast on early, though!
